Deadlines for MSW Applications

May Generalist Start Date:

  • Application Window: July -November

Candidates for admission are evaluated based on ability and achievement. A requirement of an earned baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized regional accrediting association SACS or other regionally accredited programs. Applicants from all academic backgrounds who meet the liberal arts requirements for the Generalist MSW program may apply. They must demonstrate strong interest and motivation, and commitment to social work values such as the appreciation for cultural and ethnic diversity; belief in the dignity and freedom of the individual; promotion of social justice and equal access to resources; and institutional responsiveness to human needs and social change.

Personal qualifications such as professionalism, sensitivity and responsiveness in relationships, capacity for self-awareness, concern for the needs of others, ability for abstract reasoning, conceptual thinking and strong communication skills are also core requirements. Admission is competitive and only applicants with fully completed applications will be reviewed. Candidates must be a SC resident or have ability to complete the field education requirement in SC only. The MSW Admissions Committee will consider all components which include of the application in its admission decision. Applications are reviewed on an individual basis for full admission to both Generalist and Specialization programs.

To be considered for admission to the graduate program, the applicant must provide:

  • Completed application submitted on-line to the Graduate Studies Admissions department

  • Adhere to set deadline

  • Baccalaureate and any graduate transcripts from each college or university attended

  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably one related to work experience and one to academic experience. Personal/character references from family members, friends, co-workers, and clergy are not admissible.  

  • Resume

  • One-page narrative describing the reason the applicant wants to attend the Limestone University program. 

Students will be informed in writing of the graduate committee’s decision on admittance into the program.

For Full Admission into the graduate program: (Generalist Program)

  1. Official Transcript – Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Recent graduates of Limestone University will not be required to have an official transcript sent from the Limestone University Registrar’s office. The Graduate Studies Admissions staff will obtain the document.
    • Applicants may transfer in a maximum of 6 graduate level credit hours from a regional and CSWE accredited college or university. Transfer credits will be reviewed by the Associate Dean of Social Work Development.
  2. Two letters of recommendation - Personal/character references from family members, friends, co-workers, and clergy are not admissible. If graduated within the last five years, one letter should be academic. An employer or someone who has supervised your volunteer work are acceptable references.
  3. Current Resume
  4. One page narrative describing the reason the applicant wants to attend the Limestone University MSW program.
  5. Students whose native language is not English must submit scores on the TOEFL test: a score on the electronic version of 100 is required; a score of 550 is required on the paper version. This requirement may be waived if the student provides evidence of the completed an accredited ESL program.

Conditional Admission into the graduate program: (Generalist Program)

  1. Official Transcript – Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA 2.6 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Recent graduates of Limestone University will not be required to have an official transcript sent from the Limestone University Registrar’s office. The Graduate Studies Admissions staff will obtain the document.
    • Applicants may transfer in a maximum of 6 graduate-level credit hours from a regional and CSWE accredited college or university. Transfer credits will be reviewed by the Associate Dean of Social Work Development.
  2. Two professional letters of recommendation - Personal/character references from family members, friends, co-workers, and clergy are not admissible. If graduated within the last five years, one letter should be academic. An employer or someone who has supervised your volunteer work are acceptable references.
  3. Current Resume

After completion of 12 credit hours, all conditionally accepted MSW students will be automatically reassessed for full acceptance based on overall GPA in the first 12 hours attempted. Students must achieve a 3.0 GPA in the 12 hours. The student will be notified in writing of their full acceptance status through the program.

Full Admission into the graduate program:(Specialization)

  1. Official Transcript – Obtained a bachelor’s degree from a regionally and CSWE accredited college or university with either a BA, BS, or BSW degree in Social Work, with a minimum 3.00 overall GPA.
    • Recent graduates of Limestone University will not be required to have an official transcript sent from the Limestone Registrar’s office. The document will be obtained by the Graduate Studies admissions staff.
    • Applicants may transfer a maximum of 6 graduate-level credit hours from a regional and CSWE accredited college or university. Transfer credits will be reviewed by the Associate Dean of Social Work Development.
  2. Two professional letters of recommendation - Personal/character references from family members, friends, co-workers, and clergy are not admissible. If the applicant graduated within the last five years, one letter should be academic. A letter may be submitted from an employer or someone who has supervised volunteer work.
  3. Current Resume

While the LU-MSW Program respects the candidate's work and lifetime experiences, these experiences are not counted toward any credit or grade outcomes. Therefore, credit for life experience in accordance with the mandates of the Council on Social Work Education, will result in no credit given for life experiences. Students will not receive academic credit for life experience or previous volunteer, service-learning activities or assignments, or work experience in social work. Academic credit will not be granted for life experience or previous work experience, and such experience will not be substituted for any of the courses in the academic, professional foundation, or the field education areas. This policy is outlined in the Limestone University MSW Student Catalog, Academic Catalog, and in the Limestone University MSW Student Field Manuel.
 
Students are also informed that work and lifetime experiences, are not counted toward any credit or grade outcomes, upon application to the Limestone University – MSW program.
