Limestone University, the Athletics Department, and the nationally renowned men’s lacrosse program are pleased to announce that C.R. Horton, long-time Vice President for Information Technology and a huge supporter of Limestone lacrosse, has funded an endowed lacrosse scholarship.
The scholarship will be named in honor of C.R. Horton who has been an avid supporter of the Saints and the men’s lacrosse team for decades and is often referred to as the program’s beloved No. 1 fan – even donning a familiar No. 1 jersey at Limestone games. The newly endowed scholarship will be awarded to a men’s lacrosse player who is a rising senior in the classroom with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
“The C.R. Horton family has been as generous to the men’s lacrosse program and Limestone University as can be imagined,” said head men’s lacrosse coach J.B. Clarke. “Our ‘Fan #1’ continues to bless us with his support, and we could not be more thrilled to have an endowed scholarship in his name.”
Horton previously provided a generous gift that was used to renovate the men’s lacrosse locker room in the Bob Campbell Field House. The locker room was dedicated in his honor during in 2015 – a season in which the Saints won the second of three NCAA Division II National Championships in a four-year span.
“We have added the C.R. Horton locker to the place our students call home,” Clarke continued. “This locker will be placed in the premiere spot in the locker room and each recipient will occupy this locker for his senior season! We are grateful for C.R.’s friendship, support, and legacy within our program.”
“C.R. has been a generous supporter of Limestone University and the Athletics Department,” said Carleigh Ramsey, Limestone’s Director of the Saints Club and Advancement Services Coordinator. “C.R.’s dedication to Limestone will continue to thrive through the endowed scholarship, and his example shows how support for a program can significantly assist help our students gain a quality education.”
Following a career in the U.S. Navy, Horton gave 29 years of service to Limestone, which included time on the President’s Cabinet as the Vice President of the Extended Campus (now known and the Online & Evening Program) and Information Technology. He endowed a scholarship to honor his mother, the Lois Daniels Horton Endowed Scholarship Fund, which is made available to an Online Program student who is full-time with at least a 3.0 GPA.
“Limestone Athletics has been tremendously blessed to have a supporter like C.R. Horton,” noted Limestone Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Cerino. “He is our beloved No. 1 fan, a gracious supporter, and a once-in-a-lifetime friend to Limestone, and I personally cannot thank him enough. His legacy will have a lasting impact on Limestone Athletics for decades to come.”
