Celebrating Earth Day 2012 in a Big Way

earth-day-2012-logoEarth Day, in its 42nd year, is officially on Sunday, April 22. But since Limestone College believes in going above and beyond, several days are required to fit in all the wonderful events in store.

The College has planned a calendar of events from Monday (April 16) to Thursday (April 19), and a host of area businesses and organizations are partnering with Limestone to make Earth Day 2012 an event to remember.

Schedule of Events

Monday, April 16

• Tree Planting
Limestone students will visit three local elementary schools (Mary Bramlett, Alma, and Limestone-Central) to plant trees provided by the Gaffney Board of Public Works. Two plants will be planted at each school.

• Limestone's Art Department hosts a showing of the movie "Waste Land"; 7:30 p.m.; Granberry Hall; Room 106

Filmed over nearly three years, "Waste Land" follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he travels from Brooklyn to his native Brazil to visit and Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There, he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores"-self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives.
