Professor Among Select Few to Take Part in Bioinformatics Institute

Dr. Suzanne Lindley

The American Society for Microbiology has selected Dr. Suzanne Lindley, Associate Professor of Biology at Limestone College, to take part in its Bioinformatics Institute March 10-14 in Washington, DC.

Lindley is one of 22 professors who were selected to participate through competitive applications. Other institutions represented by participants are Duke University, the University of Minnesota, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Bioinformatics refers to the use of computers to handle voluminous amounts of biological information such as the human genome. With new technology, research scientists can more easily and efficiently store, search and characterize the genetic code of genes, the proteins linked to each gene and their associated functions.

Black History Month Event to Explore Global Importance of Obama Election

Dr. Waldo E. Martin

In celebration of Black History Month, Limestone College will present a Thursday, February 4th lecture by University of California, Berkeley History Professor Dr. Waldo E. Martin, entitled "Dreams from my father: Barack Obama, Frederick Douglass, and History."

The lecture, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will be in Fullerton Auditorium, and is free and open to the public.

Martin is an OAH (Organization of American Historians) distinguished lecturer. According to its mission statement, OAH promotes excellence in the scholarship, teaching and presentation of American history, and encourages wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history. He is also author of The Mind of Frederick Douglass and Brown v. Board of Education: A Brief History With Documents.

Limestone Senior Sinks Shot for $10,000

Limestone College senior Cruz Thomas won $10,000 on the Pick a Shot promotion during halftime of the Saints basketball game on Monday night, January 25th.

Thomas, a criminal justice major from Camden, S.C., made three-quarter court shot to win the prize.
