Physical Education Programs & Degrees

The physical education curriculum offers the student an opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Physical Education or a major in Athletic Training.  The program also offers a concentration in Strength and Conditioning.  Minors are offered in Coaching and Physical Education.

Required Core Courses

In addition to the General Education requirements necessary for graduation, the following courses are required of all majors in Physical Education and Athletic Training:

  1. Biology:
    • General Biology I
    • Human Anatomy
    • Human Physiology
  2. Physical Education Core Courses:
    • Personal and Community Health
    • First Aid and CPR
    • Kinesiology
    • Exercise Physiology
    • Any two physical activity courses

 

Physical Education Major:

The physical education major consists of the previously mentioned Physical Education Core courses plus 17 semester hours in Physical Education course electives as follows:

  • Foundations of Physical Education
  • 5 Physical Activity courses
  • 9 semester hours of Physical Education electives at the 300 level or above

 

Physical Education - Teacher Education

In addition to the Physical Education Core courses, the Teacher Education program in Physical Education involves 17 semester hours in other Physical Education courses, 14 semester hours in Physical Education Methods courses, 12 semester hours in Education courses and a semester-long (12 semester hours) student teaching practicum.

Strength and Conditioning Concentration

This concentration consists of the 26 semester hour Physical Education Core, plus a 28-31 semester hour concentration consisting of the following courses:

  • Essentials of Chemistry
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Elementary Statistics
  • Foundations of Physical Education
  • Basic Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Strength Training and Fitness Program Design
  • Motor Behavior
  • Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education
  • Weight Training Techniques and Instruction
  • Strength and Conditioning Practicum
  • Strength and Conditioning Internship

 

Coaching Minor

A minor in coaching, open to any student at Limestone College, involves a total of 18-21 hours of study, consisting of six core courses and two electives:

  • First Aid and CPR
  • Basic Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries
  • Principles and Problems of Coaching
  • Management of Physical Education, Health and Sports Programs
  • Psychology of Sport
  • Coaching Internship
  • Theory and Practice of Coaching Electives (select two):Basketball, Soccer, Baseball/Softball, Football, Lacrosse

 

Physical Education Minor

A minor in physical education involves 20 semester hours as follows:

  • All courses from the Physical Education Core
  • Foundations of Physical Education
  • An additional physical activity course
  • 4 semester hours of Physical Education electives at the 300 level or above
