Student Social Work Organization Holds Successful Food Drive

The Limestone College Student Social Work Organization (SSWO) has announced the results of its Thanksgiving Food Drive and the winner of the inaugural “Turkey Bowl” competition.

Total donations included 20 turkeys, 80 cans of yams, 144 cans of green beans, 68 cans of corn, 20 cans of cranberry sauce, 36 boxes of macaroni and cheese, 100 boxes of mashed potatoes, 107 boxes of stuffing, and various other food items.

Those collections provided 13 local families in need and an area veteran’s home with meals for Thanksgiving. The SSWO also delivered donations to Cherokee County Meals On Wheels, providing many more families and individuals with holiday feasts.

The winner of the inaugural Turkey Bowl was the Limestone College Marching Saints with 14,310 points. Second place went to Dr. Jerry Wright and Dr. Bonnie Wright with 3,960 points. Placing third was the Limestone College “Call Me Mister” program with a total of 3,300 points.

Turkey Bowl points were accumulated through a combination of donations and volunteer time for the food drive.

“Limestone College and the Student Social Work Organization would like to thank everyone who donated time and goods to the food drive,” said SSWO member Josh Harvey. “Because of you, we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals to people who otherwise would not have had them. We are looking forward to bringing in even more donations next year, and we hope many more people will be a part of it.”

The Marching Saints will be honored on a plaque as the 2014 Turkey Bowl champions, and that plaque will be displayed in the Social Work classroom inside the Curtis Administration Building.
