In an effort to cultivate a greater love of the game in the area, the nationally-ranked Limestone College men’s soccer team will be hosting a Youth Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Saints take on Mount Olive at 3 p.m.
Limestone head coach Eric Alsop is extending an invitation for local youth soccer players to attend the game, a...nd to be recognized during halftime of the contest taking place at Saints Field.
Following the game, the area youth will have the opportunity to meet-and-greet their favorite Limestone soccer players, get autographs, and take photos.
“We are looking forward to having the next generation of soccer players on our pitch this weekend,” Alsop said. “ It’s important for those younger players to have older players to look up to, and hopefully inspire them to continue working hard to develop their games.”
Ranked No. 19 nationally in NCAA Div. II, Limestone is currently 7-2 overall. The Saints went into Wednesday’s matchup with Clayton State at No.3 in the Southeast Regional Rankings. Clayton State, No.5 in the Southeast Region, slipped past Limestone 3-2.
That loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Saints.
Success and a national ranking have certainly helped Limestone develop a devoted following locally. And because of that, Alsop knew he and his Saints needed to repay that loyalty with a Youth Appreciation Day.
“The whole idea of this day was actually inspired by one of our regular summer day campers, Tristan Medley, who loves to watch our forward, Jorge Mackenna, play,” Alsop explained. “Tristan and his family come to several of our games each season, always cheering us and Jorge on to victory. Because of dedicated young players like that, we wanted to find a way to get even more of them excited about the game, as well as Limestone soccer.”
