Limestone Professor Aubrey L. Sejuit Elected President of S.C. Social Workers Association

Limestone University Assistant Professor of Social Work Dr. Aubrey L. Sejuit was recently elected as the President of the National Association of Social Workers-South Carolina Chapter.  

Sejuit has previously held many roles within the organization, most recently serving as President-Elect in 2021-2022. She has also given presentations alongside students at various symposiums and will continue to serve on the symposium committee in her role as President.

As the new President of the NASW-SC and a Licensed Independent Social Worker-Clinical Practice, Sejuit hopes to bridge the gap between social workers and the Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation regarding licensure. The purpose of this government department is to promote the health, safety, and economic well-being of the public through regulation, licensing, enforcement, training, and education.

Sejuit believes that her experience teaching in the Master of Social Work Program and as a counselor in the Sib Collins Counseling Center at Limestone gives her the experience needed to help both newly graduated social workers and long-time professionals navigate the licensing process.

“I really want to help people in that area,” she said. “It’s confusing unless you’re in it yourself, unless you’ve been doing it yourself.”

On the national level, she will continue working on a compact agreement that makes it easier for those social workers who are licensed in one state to cross state lines for work in another.

In addition to keeping students and professionals updated on licensing issues, Sejuit plans to continue Legislative Day, an event designed to help social work students and professionals better understand legislation and policy changes in the state related to social work. She also wants to go further towards recruiting and retaining social workers for the organization.

"A lot of the things that I'm going to be doing, is going to be geared toward working with students,” she explained. “That's where my area of focus is going to be for the state of South Carolina this year."

Founded in 1955, the National Association of Social Workers is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world. It works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.

The National Association of Social Workers-South Carolina Chapter looks to provide networking opportunities, educational and training experiences, information about job opportunities, and advocacy for social workers around the state. The organization helps to shape legislation that affects the health, welfare, and education South Carolina residents, and members of the organization serve as experts in several areas of social work interest.

Sejuit is a graduate of Penn State University, where she earned her Associate of Arts degree in Letters, Arts, and Sciences, Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree, and Master of Education degree in Teaching & Curriculum. She is also a graduate of Syracuse University, where she earned her Master of Social Work degree, and the University of South Carolina where she earned her Doctorate in Counselor Education & Supervision. As an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, she served as an Intelligence Analyst with the 203D MI BN and the Intelligence Security Command. She is also a graduate of Cochise College where she earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Intelligence Operations Studies with honors.
