Students Make Presentation at SCAHPERD Conference

Six Limestone College students took part in the 88th annual S.C. Alliance For Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference and Exposition held Nov. 13-15 in Myrtle Beach.

Those attending included students Elizabeth Bunn, Josh Lang, Kelsey Nabors, Callie Phillips, Ryan Stephens, and Denis Schulz, along with Associate Professor of Physical Education Dr. Cindy Cavanaugh and Assistant Professor of Physical Education Rhonda Fleming.

The group from Limestone, along with Mr. Marc Camp from Limestone-Central Elementary School in Gaffney, did a presentation entitled “Professional Development Schools: Working Together to Make Stronger Future Professionals.” Camp, a Physical Education teacher, has long served as a cooperating teacher for Limestone, mentoring students in the education field.

Limestone’s students also attend various educational sessions and workshops on a variety of topics.

“Throughout the conference, various leaders from different schools remarked about how professional our students were,” Dr. Cavanaugh said. “I was extremely pleased with how they represented Limestone.”

The students also took part in a “Superstars” competition that featured a variety of physical activities. The event was designed to provide students from the 10 participating college and universities with an opportunity to meet their future colleagues and to bond within their majors’ clubs through friendly competition.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the conference,” Nabors noted. “It was a great opportunity for me as a future educator to network and learn from other physical education professionals. It was a great experience that I know will benefit me in my career.”

The mission of SCAHPERD is to promote health, physical activity and wellness among the state`s citizens through effective professional development, leadership, education and advocacy.

“These students spend time with me, along with their supervising teacher at the College, doing observations of my physical education classes,” Camp explained about his role with Limestone College. “I was very proud of the students and how they handled themselves during the conference. They conducted themselves like seasoned veterans.”
