Student Social Work Organization Revives "Turkey Bowl" To Provide Thanksgiving Meals
After an absence last year, the Limestone University Student Social Work Organization has brought back its popular Thanksgiving community service project known as The Turkey Bowl.
The food drive will provide local families with an entire Thanksgiving Day meal. The families are being identified and selected by counselors with the Cherokee County School District.
Limestone’s Social Work Students pack boxes with all the items needed for a Thanksgiving feast. The University’s students will pack the boxes and deliver to families on Monday, Nov. 23.
“With a goal to feed 25 families, this year’s revival has turned into some friendly competition between faculty and students, and has also spread out into the community,” said Limestone Assistant Professor of Social Work Beth Hyatt. “Donations have come in from the Cherokee County History and Arts Museum, as well as the Blacksburg Rotary Club. Professor Megan Anderson has played a major role in the success of this project, and we can’t thank her enough. Her department won the last three Turkey Bowls that we have had.”
If anyone would like to donate, the following items are needed: frozen turkeys, canned green beans, dressing/stuffing, gravy, instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, rice, rolls, yams, cranberry sauce, and dessert. Donations will be accepted until Friday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m. Items can be dropped off in the Curtis Administration Building Room 132 or contact Beth Hyatt at (864) 492-8409.
Financial contributions are also being accepted as part of the Turkey Bowl. Checks should be made payable to Limestone University Student Social Work Organization.
The struggle is real for families during this pandemic,” noted Student Social Work Organization President Madisyn McCullough. “We have donations coming in and hopefully we will be able to feed more than 25 families. We appreciate everyone who has donated, and we encourage as many people as possible to get involved in this great cause.”
