"Christmas On Campus" Scheduled For Saturday, December 6

Limestone College will help welcome in the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 6, when it hosts the 30th annual “Christmas On Campus” event.

Activities begin with the lighting of the luminaries at 5 p.m. From 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., the Limestone music department will perform a “Sounds of the Season” concert inside Fullerton Auditorium.

The Lighting of the Christmas tree will take place at 7:45 p.m. on the front campus, followed by a visit from Santa Claus at 7:55 p.m.

“This is such a wonderful way to welcome the entire community to our campus for Christmas,” said Limestone Director of Alumni Programs Mandy Hoyle. “We are so excited about everyone coming out to see the beautiful luminaries and the tree lighting, enjoying the concert, and getting to see Santa. What a great way to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season.”

The featured groups for the “Sounds of the Season” concert include the Limestone College and Community Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Gena Poovey and accompanied by Dr. David Thompson; and the Limestone Jazz Combo, directed by John Parks. Making a guest appearance will be Spartanburg Bella Corda, a classical guitar ensemble (directed by Michael Miller) including eight members ranging in age from 9 to 18 years old. There will also be a reading of the Christmas Story and the singing of traditional carols with the audience.

The Limestone Brass Ensemble will play at the lighting of the Christmas tree and during Santa's visit.

The tradition of celebrating Christmas on Campus dates back to 1984 when the late Les Gregory, a former employee and graduate of Limestone College, arranged for 200 luminaries to be lit in honor of retired Limestone College professor Lucy G. Wheeler. With that, Christmas on Campus was born.

Since Gregory's inception, the luminaries have grown to over 10,000 candles and Christmas on Campus has evolved into one of the most anticipated nights of the year at the Gaffney-based College, Hoyle said.
