Bob Campbell Field House Dedication Set For Friday

Bob Campbell Field House Dedication Scheduled for Oct. 24

A building dedication has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m., for the new Bob Campbell Field House at Limestone College. The ceremony comes a year and one day after the groundbreaking was held for the new athletics facility.

The public is invited to attend the Field House dedication that will take place behind the new building, which adjoins the Limestone Center, located at 130 Leadmine Street in Gaffney. The Athletics portion of the Limestone Center will also be re-named to be a part of the Bob Campbell Field House.

In the spring of 2013, with help from Trustee William Brown, the Robert S. Campbell Foundation pledged $750,000 towards the athletics portion of the current Capital Campaign if Limestone raised another $1.5 million. A new Field House, along with several other athletics facility improvements, was made possible when Limestone surpassed its goal and raised $1,645,905.

The new synthetic turf and lighting on Saints Field, along with many improvements to the baseball stadium, will be dedicated in the future, Limestone officials said.

The new 23,000 square foot Field House includes 455 lockers, with separate areas for football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, and field hockey. The building also includes a laundry facility, equipment storage, a concessions area and restrooms for spectators, and a ticket sales box office.

Including both outdoor and indoor sports, Limestone College currently has 823 student-athletes on campus. The indoor teams utilize locker room space at the Timken Center and Dr. Walt Griffin Physical Education Center.

"Imagine being a member of a national championship lacrosse team who must dress out for games in your dorm room, or even in your car", said Mike Cerino, Vice President For Intercollegiate Athletics, at the time of the groundbreaking on Oct. 23, 2013. "Imagine that same scenario for almost all of our outdoor athletic teams along with juggling game schedules to make it all happen in the daytime because the fields do not have lighting. Imagine starting a brand new football team and having no locker room and no shower facility within close proximity to the practice field. You don't have to imagine it, because that's been our reality for close to 20 years. But all of that is about to change."

Limestone’s “Today’s Needs…Tomorrow’s Dreams” capital campaign seeks to raise a total of $12 million, including $6 million for a new library, $4.8 million for athletics improvements, and $1.2 million for the “Limestone Fund.” To date, over $8.5 million has been pledged to the capital campaign.

Phase II of the Athletics portion of the Capital Campaign, expected to take place in future years, will also include new grandstands and a press box at Saints Field, work on the softball complex, and more.
