Limestone Music Faculty Member Premieres At International Festival

Limestone College adjunct faculty member Eric Henson recently gave the world premiere of Ryan Williams’ 2017 piece, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, at the 2018 International Trombone Festival at the University of Iowa.

Henson performed as a part of the festival’s University Faculty Showcase Recital Series held July 11-14 in Iowa City. The series featured faculty members from prestigious music schools across the United States and focused on new and innovative works for trombone. Performers were selected for the series only after being approved by a rigorous and competitive peer review process.

In addition to his solo performance, Henson performed alongside members of the Atlanta Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Boston Symphony, and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as a member of the Southeast Trombone Symposium’s Professors Choir.

The piece, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, was composed by Columbia native Ryan Williams. The piece is one of many of his works written to be performed by solo bass trombone.

Henson, who is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of South Carolina, joined the faculty of Limestone College in 2011 and has rapidly grown the low brass studio in both quantity and quality.

Ensembles under his direction have given performances at the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the 2017 South Carolina Music Educator’s Conference, and the 2017 Great American Brass Band Festival.
