Dr. Mark Reger To Soon Transition Into Teaching Full-Time

Dr. Mark Reger will soon set aside his position as Limestone’s Dean of Faculty and will then begin teaching at the College full time.

Since coming to Limestone over 10 years ago, Reger has held his position as Dean of Faculty while also teaching a small number of classes each semester. As the Dean of Faulty/Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, he oversees all faculty matters, while also working with curriculum, program development, student issues related to courses, grade appeals, and more.

Once Reger leaves his Dean of Faculty role in December, he will become a full-time Professor within the Department of English and Foreign Languages. He expects to teach a combination of Day Campus and Online Program classes.

Reger informed members of the faculty of his decision during a workshop held at the school during the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 16. Limestone President Dr. Darrell Parker has announced that a national search will soon be underway to fill Reger’s position later this year.

“By stepping away as Dean of Faculty, I will be able to fully commit my time and attention to my first love, which is teaching,” Reger explained. “My time at Limestone has been wonderful. I am not retiring, but simply ending one era and beginning another. It has been an honor to work for such a great place in Limestone College, and especially alongside (Vice President for Academic Affairs) Dr. Karen Gainey. The first 10 years have gone by so quickly. During my time here, I have truly never gone to work a single day – because it does not feel like work when you are a part of the environment at Limestone. I am looking forward to remaining a part of the Limestone family, but in a different capacity.”

Reger received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. He was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1989. Before coming to Limestone, he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi Valley State University. He has also served at a number of other schools, including Avila University in Kansas City; Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte; and William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

An accomplished editor and published author, Reger served as the book review editor for H-Ideas, an online scholarly network devoted to intellectual history at Michigan State University. For several years, he was the associate editor of the Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He has published articles on figures as diverse as Charlotte Bronte, Virginia Woolf, Auguste Renoir, and Edouard Manet. He has a long-term interest in African and African-American film and is currently working on an edition of essays by Leslie Stephen.

Reger resides in Charlotte, with his wife of 30 years, where he served for many years as member and chair of the Greater Charlotte CROP Walk Committee. Charlotte CROP is a poverty-fighting organization that helps to improve the quality of life of people suffering from poverty and hunger.

“While we will certainly miss Dr. Reger’s dedication as Dean of Faculty, we are excited that he will remain with us as an extraordinary full-time faculty member,” Dr. Parker said. “Dr. Reger has helped to lead Limestone in strategic and visionary ways for many years. As he decides to return to his roots in academic teaching, there is no doubt that the fruits of his leadership leave our College significantly stronger.”
