"National Library Week" Events Planned At Limestone

Limestone College will be participating in National Library Week which will be observed April 12-18 with the theme "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library."

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

Limestone’s main event during National Library Week, scheduled at the A.J. Eastwood Library on campus, is the Faculty Recognition Presentations taking place April 13-15.

“Our goal with the Faculty Recognition Presentations is to show the community that not only do our professors do a good job of teaching, but they also have other sides to them as well,” said Lizah Ismail, the Library Director. “We appreciate these professors taking the time to speak and share information.”

The professors speak in the Atrium area of the library. Three Grand Prizes will be given away in a drawing on the final day of activities. The prizes are being provided by the Limestone Campus Store. There will also be smaller prize giveaways throughout the three-day celebration. Those prizes are being donated by Library staff.

“This is the second time we have participated in National Library Week by hosting events at the A.J. Eastwood Library,” Ismail noted. “We want to showcase our facility and our services as much as possible so that our students and our community know about all we have to offer.”

On Monday, April 13, Dr. Shelly Meyers will speak at 11:30 a.m. on “Connected Reading As A Formative Assessment Strategy,” while Dr. Jerry Wright will do a presentation at 1:15 p.m. on “The Monster Under the Bed Was Called Algebra: Why You Can’t Do Algebra Word problems!”

Also on Monday, music student Mike Makaza will be playing the guitar beginning at 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 14, Dr. Scott Tanner will present “Your Immune System And Colon Cancer” at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., Dr. Paula Schubert and Dr. Cindy Cavanaugh will present “Professional Development In Action: Going Back To Elementary School.” At 11:30 a.m., Stephen Gilmore will present “Alice In Wonderland And Mathematics – Or Mathematics Lessons For Those Who Are Afraid Of Mathematics.”
