Timken Foundation Provides Grant For Roof Repairs

A gift from the Timken Foundation is assisting Limestone College in replacing the roof at the Timken Center.

Limestone recently submitted a grant proposal seeking funding to help with the roof repairs for the gymnasium. The Timken Foundation awarded the College $100,000 for the $182,000 project. Limestone’s maintenance budget will cover the amount above what is being provided by the Timken Foundation.

The majority of the work will be done to stop water leaks from the roof over the 25,000 square foot gymnasium that is used primarily for Saints basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams, as well as intramural activities and physical education classes. A women’s volleyball match was recently moved to Gaffney High School’s gymnasium due to the roof leaks at the Timken Center.

There are several areas of the building where roof leaks have occurred, including at center court and other playing areas, as well as some portions of the spectator seating area. Leaks have also taken place in other areas of the building, including the game officials’ locker room, classrooms and offices. The Timken Center’s indoor pool has also experienced roof leaks.

“We appreciate the Timken Foundation assisting Limestone with these much needed repairs,” said Limestone President Dr. Walt Griffin. “The roof has been patched a number of times over the years, but those short-term fixes are no longer working and a new roof is needed. Our top priority is always the safety of our students, staff, and guests.

“In addition to the safety concerns, the roof issues are impacting the integrity of the structure,” Dr. Griffin continued. “Water leaks can rot wood, damage ceiling tiles and drywall, and ruin carpeting. We are excited that these concerns, thanks to the support of the Timken Foundation, are now being resolved.”

The repairs are now underway, and should be completed in early to mid-November. The installation of the new roof membrane and other repairs will come with a 20-year warranty.
