When it comes to making a positive impact within the community, members of the Limestone College Student Government Association (SGA) believe in putting their money where their mouths are.
On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Limestone SGA members presented a check for $500 to the Cherokee County Meals-On-Wheels organization. Terri Dennis, Executive Director of Meals-on-Wheels accepted the check to be used to provide daily meals for the elderly and disabled in Cherokee County.
The funds came directly from the SGA members themselves. "At the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year, we signed a community service pledge and this contribution is a direct result of that, " said SGA President Donta Ingram. "We love Cherokee County and I think it's fairly well known that Limestone College and her students have a tremendous sense of civic duty and responsibility."
According to Ms. Dennis, the funds provided by Limestone SGA members is most opportune as the need for Meals-On-Wheels services is expected to increase. "We delivered over 104,000 meals last year and we know for certain that the demand for even more meals will only go up because of the so-called Silver Tsunami as the 'baby boomers' become seniors," she said. Silver Tsunami refers to the phenomenon in which more than 10,000 Americans reach the age of senior citizen every day. "Our purpose is not simply to provide meals but to reach out and touch other areas of the recipients' lives as needs are observed. It's people like the Limestone SGA members who make fulfilling that mission possible."
In reaction to the generosity of the Limestone students, Ms. Dennis said "It's so exciting to see young people who are literally this county's future so willing and strongly devoted to helping others. For college students especially, spare money can be hard to come by, but Limestone students truly care about making a positive difference in the lives of others."
