Success From First Annual Choral Celebrations Clinic Leads to 2013 Edition

Choral Celebrations WebForty-five students from Gaffney High School, Granard Middle School, and Gaffney Middle School amassed on the Limestone campus October 19 to take part in the first choral clinic and performed a concert in the College's Fullerton Auditorium in the evening to show what they had accomplished.

Under the direction of Dr. Gena Poovey, Chair of Limestone's Music Department and Director of Choral Activities, the students performed a variety of titles including Misty Morning (Carl J. Nygard, Jr.), Giovani Lieti (Mozart), Sanctus (Haydn), and Praise His Holy Name (Keith Hampton).

"Thanks to good attitudes, talented musicians, and conscientious directors, the Choral Celebrations Clinic was a great success," said Dr. Poovey. "This is the first year for our clinic, and it provides the participants—who were nominated by the choir directors at their schools—with the experience of good choral music on a college campus."

With a highly successful First Annual Limestone College Choral Celebrations Clinic in the books, officials with Limestone's Department of Music have already secured a date—October 18—for the 2013 edition. While participants in the First Annual Limestone College Choral Celebrations Clinic hailed exclusively from Cherokee County, registration for the 2013 Clinic is being expanded greatly to accommodate music students from throughout the Upstate South Carolina. The Choral Celebrations Clinic is yet another avenue used by Limestone to reach high school and middle school students. During the Fall 2013 academic year, the McMillan Scholarship program will be launched. Named in honor of one of Limestone's longtime professors, Montague McMillan, the program is for young women from South Carolina who have high school GPAs of 3.0 or better. Additionally, a marching band will be established, beginning in 2013, that will become the most visible ensemble of the College.
