Limestone Students Energize Children to Read

On April 21st, eleven Limestone College students literally brought to life the characters of the popular children's book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? for a large group of children enrolled in Cherokee County's Head Start program.

 

The event was organized by Leadership Cherokee as part of their Share Your Love for Books campaign. Since the campaign's launch, the Limestone family-including students, faculty, and staff-has been a driving force in the collection of children's books that have been distributed to underprivileged preschoolers throughout Cherokee County. Of the more than 2,500 total children's books accumulated, over 2,000 were collected and donated by Limestone. Members of the Limestone Social Work Club were especially effective by collecting over 2100 books.

The Head Start children, all of whom are 3-5-years-old, looked on in fascination as the Limestone students-donned in character costumes-read the Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Afterwards, the children eagerly gathered around the students to accept complimentary copies of the book. "Studies show that learning to read and developing language skills between the ages of one and five is the single best indicator of future success for children," said Melody Brutkiewicz of Leadership Cherokee. "If we can get them excited about reading, it will definitely pay dividends for them as well as for Cherokee County." The Limestone cast of characters was comprised of

• Lucas Luke (Black Dog), a freshman from Appling, GA majoring in Business Administration

• Heather Puchel (Teacher), a freshman from Pickens, SC majoring in Biology

• Matthew Ferguson (Brown Bear), a senior from Leesville, SC  majoring in Theatre

• Lauren Finney (Yellow Duck), a freshman from Rock Hill, SC majoring in Theatre

• Cynthia Tate (Purple Cat), a sophomore from Gaffney majoring in Theatre
