Those unfamiliar with Henley's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy will be unaware of the trials and tribulations of three Southern sisters, with Lenny's shrunken ovary, Meg's early psychotic episode, Babe's brush with the law (she was aiming higher, but hit the stomach!), Mama's suicide, Barnette's vendetta, Doc's injury, and not one, but two terrible accidents involving beloved family pets, one might think there is little room for laughter in this play, but laughter is Henley's particular forte. The New York Times has written that Henley serves up pain as if it were a piece of cake.
The Pulitzer Prize Committee writes, "Crimes of the Heart is a funhouse of accelerating, rollicking misfortune, a family drama filled with love, eccentricities, and Southern Gothic humor . . . The three Magrath sisters . . . tease and provoke each other and revel in shared memories and forgotten dreams." When asked by an interviewer whether families, and especially sisters, played an important role in her writing, Henley responded: "I think in Crimes of the Heart very much; growing up around women, I mean. Just having a family, I think, is different from not having a family . . . You are inextricably bound to them, concerned for them and enraged by them or enraptured by them. Families are a peculiar sort of situation."This production is directed by Limestone theatre major, Melissa Scott.
Crimes of the Heart is being produced through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
