A groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m., for the Limestone College Athletics Complex.

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking that will take place behind the Limestone Center, located at 130 Leadmine Street in Gaffney.

The event will mark the work about to begin on Phase I of Limestone’s capital campaign for athletics and academics, and will include the construction of a field house with locker rooms for its outdoor sports team, plus the installation of synthetic turf and lighting on Saints Field, along with many improvements to the Saints’ baseball field.

Limestone College officials are hopeful that a challenge gift from a donor will provide an added spark to the ambitious building campaign that will bring improvements to athletic and academic facilities.

The “Today’s Needs… Tomorrow’s Dreams” capital campaign now underway looks to raise a total of $12 million, including $6 million for a new library, $4.8 million for athletics improvements, and $1.2 million for the “Limestone Fund.”

Earlier this year, during a meeting of the Limestone College Board of Trustees, one its members issued a challenge: If $1.5 million can be raised for the athletics portion of the campaign by year’s end, the trustee will kick in another $750,000.

The goal is within sight, as approximately $800,000 has been committed to date. But with less than three months remaining before the deadline, Limestone officials are calling on its alumni and friends to help them reach their goal. Those interested in donating to the capital campaign can visit www.Limestone.edu/giving.

The new 23,000 square foot field house will include 455 lockers, with separate areas for football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, and field hockey. The building, which will adjoin the current Limestone Center, will also include a laundry facility, equipment storage, a concessions area and restrooms for spectators, and a ticket sales box office.

Including both outdoor and indoor sports, Limestone College currently has 716 student-athletes on campus. The indoor squads utilize locker room space at the Timken Center and Dr. Walt Griffin Physical Education Center.

The artificial turf at Saints Field will be used by men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and intramural sports.

Phase II of the plan, expected to take place in future years, will also include new grandstands and a press box at Saints Field. This first phase of the plan will also include improvements to the football practice field located next to Saints Field.

The baseball complex improvements include the construction of a 300-seat grandstand, along with a press box, four bullpens, batting cage facility, and team storage area.

A baseball stadium naming rights agreement has been reached with Founders Federal Credit Union. Other naming rights agreements are pending, and will be announced soon. Many other naming-rights opportunities exist within the athletics facilities, and those interested are urged to contact the Limestone College athletics department.

The new fields and facilities in Phase I of the construction project will provide practice and/or game facilities for 79 percent of Limestone’s student-athletes.

According to Limestone College officials, this first phase should be completed prior to the start of the 2014-2015 academic year in August of 2014.

The construction of the new library will begin once the funding has been obtained.
