English Department Philosophy and Goals

The English Department, through the efforts of qualified, experienced faculty and the availability of a variety of courses, strives to help every student develop the following skills:

  • Proficiency in reading and listening and an ability to communicate clearly, correctly, and effectively in both speech and writing
  • Expertise in critical thinking, arrived at through clear reasoning, logical organization, and close analysis - leading to informed judgments
 
  These goals are essentially met by courses in critical reading and composition, public speaking, and a computer-supported Writing Center that offers peer tutorials in writing.   Through offerings in literary classics, not only those of America and England but also those of other civilizations, cultures, and ethnic groups, the department strives to instill in Limestone students both aesthetic and moral values which will be a source of pleasure and self-fulfillment throughout their lives.  
 


Facilities

Limestone College provides several computer laboratories for student use.   The computers are equipped with the commonly used software for word processing and spreadsheets as well as resources for improving the grammar and style of research papers.   In addition, the Internet and the World Wide Web are accessible in order to aid in research and data retrieval.

For those students majoring in English and Theatre, Fullerton Auditorium is available.   It is a 1000 seat hall equipped for theatrical productions.   Limestone College also provides the use of the Carroll Recital Hall, a more intimate theatre setting.

Career Opportunities

Many English majors choose careers in writing; they may work for newspapers, magazines, publishing companies, public relations or advertising firms, non-profit organizations or corporations.   Many television and radio personalities begin their careers as English majors. English majors also are qualified for the increasing number of opening for technical writers.   Students with minors in English often have an advantage in securing positions in fields such as business.   The emphasis in an English degree on clear verbal and written expression serves students well in a variety of areas.

English majors with teacher certification usually become secondary school English teachers, but they may also choose from a wide range of other careers.

Majoring in English is excellent preparation for graduate school, especially law, journalism, library science, theology, literature, or creative writing.   English majors often continue their studies to become college or university professors, researchers, poets, dramatists, or fiction writers.
