Steinway Concert Coming To Fullerton Auditorium Oct. 14

Limestone College will present its first Steinway series concert of the new school year on Tuesday, Oct. 14, as pianist Kent Lyman takes the stage at Fullerton Auditorium for a 7:30 p.m. performance.

The public is cordially invited, and there is no admission fee.

During his concert, Lyman will perform on Limestone's 1969 Steinway piano that was refurbished a year ago.  As a Steinway Artist, Lyman is a member of a roster of artists who have been endorsed by Steinway & Sons and perform exclusively on Steinway pianos.

The Steinway piano series is Limestone's way of showcasing its fully restored Steinway "D" piano. Located in Fullerton Auditorium, Limestone's Steinway was literally dismantled into pieces at the Steinway & Sons facility on Long Island, NY, during its restoration in 2013.  The intensive process lasted nine months and cost over $50,000.

Lyman has distinguished himself as a soloist and chamber musician throughout much of the United States, in South Korea, China, Italy, and in Brazil. He has performed and/or lectured in many venues, including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina; the National Conference of the Sonneck Society for American Music in Worcester, Massachusetts; the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu; the Temple Square Concert Series in Salt Lake City, Utah; the Hollins Keyboard Festival in Roanoke, Virginia; and on concert series at Bemidji State University, the College of Charleston, Winthrop University, Francis Marion University, and Indiana (PA) University.

He has made a number of trips to South Korea where he has taught master classes and performed as a soloist at universities and schools throughout the country, including Seoul National University, Sejong University, and many others.  During a concert tour of Asia in the fall of 2007, he added China to his list of international venues, with concerts and master classes at conservatories of music in Shenyang and Guangzhou. Lyman has toured Brazil, where he performed at the University of Campinas, and served as the opening concert artist and as a judge for the 22nd annual Paulo Giovanini National Piano Competition in Araçatuba, Brazil.

Lyman has appeared with a number of orchestras, including the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, the Raleigh Civic Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle (Raleigh, NC), the Broward Symphony Orchestra (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), and the Florence Symphony Orchestra (SC).  As one of twelve nationally selected finalists, he has performed at the Chicago Symphony’s Ravinia Festival in master classes with Menahem Pressler, Leon Fleisher, and Misha Dichter.  He has toured the East Coast with the Piedmont Trio in performances of a program commemorating the centenary of the death of Clara Schumann.  Mr. Lyman has recorded for the Centaur label and can be heard on a CD performing chamber works of the late American composer Virgil Thomson.

Lyman is currently Professor of Music and Coordinator of Piano Studies at Meredith College in Raleigh.  He has served previously on the faculties of music at Coker College, Southwest Missouri State University, and Western Kentucky University.  A native of Utah, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington.
